This is the part-2 of a multi-post series we are calling “Get to know our Deacons.” As you know, on February 24th we will be recommending 13 men (UPDATE: now 12, one withdrew due to time constrictions) to serve as deacons, joining the current 7 who are now serving. We are thrilled to empower more servant-leaders in the life of our church and see God’s work continue to grow in and through us. In preparation for that day we are using this time to help our church members get to know these men on a little more personal level. So, we asked each one a few questions:

  1. How long have you been coming to Green Hills and what kept you coming here?
  2. What ministries have been most exciting for you to serve in throughout your life?
  3. Outside of serving at church, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I hope you enjoy getting to know our deacons and continue praying for them!

Samuel Escalante and his family have been members at Green Hills for two years, but they had attended regularly for 4 years prior to that. His heart-language is Spanish but he is excited to be understanding more and more English. The Spanish speaking congregation is still growing and requires everyone to step up in different ways and Samuel like the challenge of serving in a variety of areas, however, his primary area of service is as the director of the Spanish ministry Greeter/Usher team.

When asked what he likes doing during his “off hours,” he says “Me gusta pasar tiempo con mi familia y leer la biblia.” (translation: “I enjoy spending time with my family and reading my Bible).

Samuel and his wife Enma have one son in our children’s department named Bryan.

Peter Lee and his family began to attend Green Hills in the fall of 2016 shortly after they moved to Whittier from Los Angeles. “The reason my family continues to attend Green Hills Church is because we see God’s presence and love here. Pastor Jung and his family are amazing with sincere hearts to serve and obey God. We are blessed to have them in our lives and look forward to coming to church every Sunday.”

Although it isn’t his day job, Peter really enjoys photography. He used to be a part of the photography ministry at a previous church. In fact, he joyously and continuously serves the Lord in that capacity here at Green Hills as well. Peter serves across both the Korean and English speaking congregations with his photography, as a cell group leader and in the children’s department.

In regard to his free time, Peter had this to share. “We recently gave birth to our second daughter two months ago. As you may know how that goes, free time is a luxury in this season. But once everything normalizes, I would like to say that I enjoy life group, exercising, and traveling.”

Peter and his wife, Hannah have two young daughters, Priscilla and Claire.

David Oh has been coming to Green Hills since March of 2008 and kept coming because “the preaching and teaching was great and my wife and I were able to get connected with a really good Sunday school class.” The Oh’s were able to make meaningful connections with other couples and families in the church like Pete and Anabella Ramirez, Jamie and Barbara Barr as well as Glenn and Diane Viaes. They were also able to get involved early on which gave them a unique opportunity to be invested in the work and ministry of the church right away.

David and Esther actually met at a previous church while serving together in the youth group. In addition, he enjoys being part of the music and worship ministries here at Green Hills, while Esther serves in our children’s department as well as on the refreshment team.

In his free time, he loves to cook, read, play guitar, sing, play piano and play board games with his family. He also noted, “I should be setting aside time to exercise, but I’m still working on that one.”

David and Esther have 2 daughters, Tiffany and Hannah, and one son, Jonathan.

John Peck and his wife Tina have been attending GHBC for a little over 11 years. He says, “Green Hills is a church that makes you feel like family. It is a place to easily stay connected.”

John’s service at Green Hills has been broad. He has given leadership in men’s ministry, in Life Groups, to teaching bible studies. Additionally, it isn’t rare to find him using his handi-skills around the building as well. And while it has all been rewarding, he says, “the most rewarding has been to teach and disciple other men.” You can find his wife Tina serving in women’s ministry, at our hospitality table on Sunday, in the kitchen for fellowship meals and much more.

Outside of church John enjoys riding bikes and working around the house, but most importantly, and in case you all don’t know,… “I am a big Dodgers fan.”

John and Tina have two grown daughters, a son-in-law and two granddaughters.
